Where do maut1.de customers drive the most kilometres? In France!

maut1.de customers cover the most kilometres in France

To analyse the most popular routes, months and times of travel, the mobility start-up maut1.de has analysed all of its customers’ toll transactions anonymously for the period from January to November 2025 and identified the toll stations and times at which the highest number of passages were recorded. In total, the data analysis is based on over 1.6 million individual toll transactions. A transaction corresponds to an automated payment process using a Toll Box at a toll station.

The data shows that France plays a particularly significant role for maut1.de customers when travelling. During the period under review, more than 164 million kilometres were travelled on European toll roads using maut1.de’s Toll Boxes. Of these, around 82 million kilometres were on French toll roads – almost half of all toll kilometres travelled.

This shows that France is not just a classic holiday destination. For many travellers, it is also an important transit country on the way to Spain, Portugal or the Mediterranean..

Particularly during the summer months of July, August and September, when holidays are in full swing across Europe, holidaymakers from all over Europe converge on France’s motorways: travellers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and France itself all use the same north-south routes at the same time, heading for the Mediterranean, the Atlantic or the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, large numbers of vehicles converge at toll stations in France, particularly around midday between 12 noon and 3 pm along the main travel routes, which can lead to slow-moving traffic and long queues.

The most frequently used toll stations in France

Vienne on the A7, south of Lyon

The route is one of the main travel routes towards:

  • Côte d’Azur

  • Provence

  • Montpellier

  • Barcelona

  • Costa Brava

In the height of summer, the A7 motorway in France is one of Europe’s most popular holiday routes. Many holidaymakers from the DACH region meet travellers from France, Belgium and the Netherlands here.

Fontaine-la-Rivière, south of Paris (5th place)

This route is frequently used by travellers heading to:

  • Bordeaux

  • Atlantic Coast

  • South-West France

  • Northern Spain

  • Basque Country

Holidaymakers pass through this stretch on their way to the French Atlantic coast or further on towards Spain and Portugal. During the peak season, the area is packed with families, campers, road trippers and surfers from all over Europe.

Le Perthus on the Spanish border

Le Perthus is one of the main border crossings between France and Spain. Many maut1.de customers continue their journey from here towards:

  • Barcelona

  • Valencia

  • Alicante

  • Andalusien

  • Costa del Sol

  • Portugal

There is almost constant heavy traffic here in the summer. Motorhomes, campervans, family cars and caravans all converge here just before the Spanish border.

Villefranche-Limas towards central France

The route is frequently used for journeys to:

  • Auvergne

  • Central Massif

  • Dordogne

  • Toulouse

Many motorhome owners deliberately choose this route to avoid some of the heavily congested French holiday routes and enjoy a more relaxed journey through France.

Saint-Maurice in Burgundy

The region is regarded as an important transit point for journeys towards:

  • Southern France

  • Spain

  • Portugal

Particularly in late summer and autumn, many long-stay holidaymakers and winter visitors take this French route on their way to the Iberian Peninsula.

France as a transit country on the way to Spain and Portugal

The data shows that many maut1.de customers use France not only as a destination in its own right, but also as a key link to Spain and Portugal.

Popular French destinations among our customers include:

  • Costa Brava

  • Barcelona

  • Valencia

  • Algarve

  • Lissabon

  • Andalusien

  • Nordspanien

  • portugiesische Atlantikküste

Especially on long journeys by motorhome, caravan or family car, the stops and waiting times at French toll stations can quickly add up. During the summer holidays, travellers from all over Europe converge there — often in high temperatures of well over 30 degrees on the tarmac of the motorways and amid heavy traffic.

When is a Toll Box particularly useful for France?

The France Toll Box is particularly useful for travellers who:

  • travelling through France to Spain or Portugal

  • travelling by motorhome

  • travelling during the peak season from July to September

  • passing through several toll stations on a single route

  • wanting to plan long journeys with as few long stops as possible

According to the analysis, August is the busiest month for travel: it accounts for 21% of all toll transactions. July and September follow, each accounting for 16%. A pattern is also evident in terms of the time of day: 30% of all transactions are recorded between 12 noon and 3 pm.

It is precisely during these time slots that large numbers of holidaymakers from the DACH region converge at the toll stations alongside other travellers from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Why a Toll Box makes the journey easier, especially for motorhome drivers

Many maut1.de customers with motorhomes spend the winter in Spain or Portugal. As a result, they frequently travel through France — usually twice a year, once on the outward journey and again on the return journey.

For motorhome owners, the Toll Box France offers convenience on the road:

  • fewer stops,

  • less manoeuvring at barriers,

  • less stress on long journeys,

  • a more relaxed journey south.

Especially in the high summer temperatures, it can make a big difference whether you have to stop several times at packed French toll stations in a motorhome or can use the dedicated Télépéage lanes with your Toll Box.
