FAQ – Frequently asked questions about Croatian tolls
How does the Toll Box work in Croatia?
The Toll Box (ENC) is attached to the windscreen and communicates with the toll stations on the supported motorways. The toll is recorded automatically and charged to the customer’s account. This means there is no need to pay with cash or a card at the toll station.
Do I still have to stop at the barrier in Croatia even if I have a Toll Box?
The Toll Box uses the specially marked ENC lanes. Depending on the toll station, the barrier may open automatically once the vehicle has been detected. As a rule, it is sufficient to reduce your speed significantly. It is often not necessary to come to a complete stop, although this may be required depending on traffic conditions or the toll station.
On which motorways can I use the Toll Box in Croatia?
The Toll Box works on the supported Croatian motorways operated by participating operators. Some routes and concessionaires may be excluded. Before setting off, you should check which routes are covered by the relevant Toll Box.
Is a Toll Box worth having for holiday trips to Croatia?
Yes. Especially during the peak travel season, ENC lanes can reduce waiting times at toll stations. Furthermore, tolls are paid automatically, so there is no need to pay by cash or card.
Do I need an additional vignette in Croatia?
No. Croatia does not use a vignette system for cars. Tolls are charged on a distance-based basis. You only pay for the toll sections of motorway you have actually travelled on.
