Many Spanish motorways operate a closed-loop toll system. Under this system, your entry is recorded at the slip road, and the toll is calculated at the exit based on the distance travelled. If you do not have a Toll Box, you pay at the toll booth.
Under the open toll system, a fixed toll is charged for a specific section of motorway – regardless of the distance travelled. If you do not have a Toll Box, the charge is paid directly at the toll station.
The electronic VIA-T system records the toll automatically. Your Toll Box communicates directly with the toll station, so that the barrier opens automatically.
On lanes marked VIA-T, you can pass through many toll plazas without making a manual payment. Your Toll Box is recognised automatically, and the toll charges are conveniently billed through your customer account afterwards.
There are several ways to pay tolls in Spain, including cash payment, credit card payment, or the use of an electronic Toll Box called “Via-T.” The latter allows for quick and contactless passage through toll stations without the need to pay with cash or credit card.
The amount of tolls in Spain depends on several factors, including the distance traveled on the motorway. For example, if you drive from Barcelona to Bilbao by car, the journey covers a little more than 600 kilometers, and the toll is approximately 62.95€.
For a Category 2 vehicle with twin tires, the toll on the same route is already about 104.60€.
The toll system in Spain is divided into an open system and a closed system. In the open system, a flat fee is charged at each toll station. However, most toll stations in Spain operate using the closed system. In the closed system, a ticket is taken when entering the motorway and paid when leaving it. If the ticket is lost, a penalty fee will be charged and the maximum possible toll at the exit station must be paid.
