The Italian A1 motorway
The A1 motorway in Italy is one of the longest and most important motorways in the country. It runs from Milan in the north to Naples in the south and has a total length of approximately 750 kilometers. The A1 is part of the European road network E35 and connects some of Italy’s most important cities, including Bologna, Florence and Rome. At the toll stations of the A1, you can conveniently drive through with our toll box for Italy without having to stop and face long waiting times.
The A1 is a well-developed motorway and offers four lanes in each direction, with some sections having six lanes. The motorway is well equipped and features numerous rest areas with restaurants, petrol stations and other services. Find out more about toll charges in Italy.
The A1 is also known as the “Autostrada del Sole” (Motorway of the Sun) and was built in the 1950s. It was Italy’s first motorway and played an important role in the development of the Italian transport system and the country’s economic growth.
However, it should be noted that the A1 can be heavily frequented in some sections and that traffic problems may occur during holiday periods or in bad weather. It is therefore recommended to check traffic conditions in advance and, if necessary, choose alternative routes.
Refuelling on the A1 in Italy
There are numerous petrol stations along the A1 motorway in Italy, usually located at rest areas along the route. Here we provide you with a list of all petrol stations on the A1 (as of 2021). These petrol stations offer petrol and diesel, and often also LPG (autogas) and natural gas (CNG).
However, it should be noted that fuel prices at motorway petrol stations are often higher than at stations in nearby towns and municipalities. If you want to save money, it is recommended to refuel before entering the motorway or to look for a petrol station near a motorway exit.
Fuel Designations in Italy
Diesel = Gasolio
AdBlue = BluDiesel (Eni)
Super E5 = Benzina, Senza piombo (with 95 octane unleaded – “Senza Pb” (Pb = piombo))
Super Plus = Benzina Extra, Benzina Verde
Super E10 = You will not find the petrol type “Super E10” in Italy, as this type is not available. In Italy, there is only Super E5 (Senza piombo) and Super Plus (Benzina Verde).
LPG = GPL = Liquefied gas in Italian
Liquid propane gas is referred to in Italy as G.P.L. (“Gas di petrolio liquefatto”). In German, this liquefied gas is also called LPG (“Liquefied Petroleum Gas” or “Low Pressure Gas”), but in Italy the term GPL is commonly used.

Where can I refuel cheaply in Italy?
In Italy, fuel prices are slightly higher than in Germany or Austria. If you use the self-service option “FAI DA TE,” you can save around 10 cents per litre when refuelling. Please note that these self-service machines usually only give change and often only accept credit cards or cash. At petrol stations where an attendant refuels your vehicle, the fuel price is usually somewhat higher.
