The Italian A1 motorway

The longest and most important motorway in Italy

The A1 motorway in Italy is one of the longest and most important motorways in the country. It runs from Milan in the north to Naples in the south and has a total length of about 750 kilometres. The A1 is part of the European road network E35 and connects some of the most important cities in Italy, including Bologna, Florence and Rome. At the toll stations on the A1, you can conveniently drive through with our toll box for Italy without having to stop and accept long waiting times.

The A1 is a toll motorway and offers four lanes in each direction, with some sections having six lanes. The motorway is well developed and has numerous rest areas with restaurants, petrol stations and other services. Find out about tolls in Italy.

The A1 is also known as the "Autostrada del Sole" (Motorway of the Sun) and was built in the 1950s. It was Italy's first motorway and has played an important role in the development of the Italian transport system and the country's economic development.

However, it should be noted that the A1 is very busy in some sections and traffic problems can occur during holiday periods or in bad weather. It is therefore recommended to check the traffic situation in advance and take alternative routes if necessary.

Refuelling on the A1 in Italy

There are numerous petrol stations along the A1 motorway in Italy, usually located at the rest areas along the route. Here we have provided you with a list of all petrol stations along the A1. (as of 2021) These petrol stations offer petrol and diesel, and often also autogas (LPG) and natural gas (CNG).

However, it should be noted that prices at petrol stations on the motorway can often be higher than at petrol stations in the surrounding towns and cities. So if you want to save money, it is advisable to fill up before you get on the motorway or to look for a petrol station near the motorway exit.

Designations of fuels in Italy

  • Diesel = Gasolio
  • AdBlue = BluDiesel (Eni)
  • Super E5 = Benzina, Senza piombo (with octane number 95 without lead =„Senza Pb“ (Pb = piombo))
  • Super Plus = Benzina Extra, Benzina Verda
  • Super E10 = You will not find the petrol grade "Super E10" in Italy, as this grade is not offered. In Italy there is only Super E5 (Senza piombo) and Super Plus (Benzina verde).
  • LPG = GPL = Liquid gas in Italian
Liquid propane gas is called G.P.L. ("Gas di petrolio liquefatto") in Italy. In German, liquefied petroleum gas is also called LPG ("Liquefied Petroleum Gas" or "Low Pressure Gas"), but in Italy the designation GPL is common.

Where can I fill up cheaply in Italy?

In Italy, the prices for fuel are somewhat higher than in Germany or Austria. If you use the self-service "FAI DA TE", you can save about 10 cents per litre when filling up. Be aware that these self-service machines usually do not give change and often only work with credit cards or cash. At petrol stations where there is a pump attendant, the fuel price is usually somewhat higher.
