Tolls & Vehicles in Austria

In Austria there is a toll obligation for all vehicles travelling on public roads. This obligation applies to trucks as well as cars and motorhomes.

✓ Vignette for passenger cars

Since 1997, the toll on Austria's motorways and expressways for passenger cars and all vehicles up to and including 3.5 tons is processed via a vignette time-dependent. There is a 10-day, a 2-month, or an annual vignette. The vignette must be correctly affixed when entering the motorway or expressway, otherwise there are severe penalties of at least 120 €. For some time now, Austria has also had a digital vignette in addition to the stick-on vignette.

You can easily order an e-vignette for travelling with a car from our partner mautwelt.de.

✓ Toll box for trucks & motorhomes

Vehicles over 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight, such as large motorhomes or trucks, must use a toll box for toll collection in Austria. The toll for large vehicles is called Go-Maut. With our toll box for vehicles over 3 metres high, the toll is recorded and processed fully automatically while driving on the motorway or expressway. This saves you time and money without having to stop at the Austrian toll booths.

Note for motorhomes: Since 1 December 2023, the calculation of the toll obligation in Austria is no longer based on the maximum permissible gross weight (hzG) but on the technically permissible gross mass (tzGm). In future, the technically permissible maximum laden mass (tzGm) will determine whether a vehicle is subject to the vignette obligation or route toll (up to 3.5 tonnes tzGm) or the GO toll obligation (more than 3.5 tonnes tzGm).

Transitional period until 31 January 2029: For all vehicles registered before 1 December 2023

  • with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes were registered for the first time and
  • with a maximum permissible laden weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes,

the vignette obligation and route toll for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (tzGm) will continue to apply until 31 January 2029 (§ 33 Para. 18 Z 8 BStMG).

☛ Good to know

Toll rates for Vignette and Go toll in Austria

✓ Vignette toll rates

The vignette price depends on the type of vehicle: motorcycle, passenger car and the period of validity: 1-day or 10-day vignette, 1-month vignette and annual vignette.

✓ Toll rates Go Maut

The amount of the Go toll depends on the distance driven, the number of axles of your vehicle, as well as the emission class (EURO 0-VI). The toll becomes more expensive the further you drive, the more axles your vehicle has and the lower the EURO emission class. Since 2017, there has also been a surcharge for traffic-related noise pollution. Furthermore, the toll is slightly more expensive at night (between 22:00 and 05:00) than during the day.

On the special toll routes:

  • A 9 Gleinalm or Bosruck tunnel (Pyhrn motorway)
  • A 10 Tauern and Katschberg tunnel (Tauern motorway)
  • A 11 Karawanken tunnel (Karawanken motorway)
  • A 13 Brenner pass (Brenner motorway)
  • S 16 Arlberg road tunnel (Arlberg expressway)
  • A 12 Inntal motorway state border at Kufstein to Innsbruck-Amras junction
an increased tariff applies.
