FAQ - Frequently asked questions about tolls in Austria
For which vehicles do drivers have to set the number of axles?
Should you carry a vehicle declaration in Austria?
What do I do if my toll box does not work?
What is the difference between the toll box and the Go-Box for Austria?
Are there routes without motorway tolls in Austria?
Yes, German drivers can drive on the A1, A12 and A14 motorways to Salzburg or Kufstein (connection to Kitzbühel) without buying a vignette.
What is the difference between the toll for large vehicles and the vignette requirement?
Vehicles and large motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes GVW have to pay the toll in Austria on a distance-based basis using a toll box. A certain amount is charged per kilometre driven, depending on the EURO emission class and the number of axles, among other things. All other vehicles are subject to toll stickers on toll routes in Austria. Vignettes are small stickers that are affixed to the windscreen of the car or, more simply, are registered digitally and are valid for a certain period of time (e.g. 1 month).
Is a digital vignette more expensive than a normal vignette?
No, the digital vignette costs the same as the conventional adhesive vignette.
What happens if you don't have a vignette for Austria?
If you are caught driving on an Austrian motorway without a valid vignette, you will have to pay a replacement toll of 120 euros for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. The replacement toll for motorbikes is 65 euros.
When do I have to pay the toll in Austria?
The vignette must have been purchased before you set off - either online or as a vignette that is attached to the windscreen. The toll in Austria is compulsory. Those who do not adhere to the rules must reckon with high replacement toll payments.
