Travelling with toll boxes

Avoid traffic jams with maut1.de

Rosenheim, 15 May 2025. Summertime is travelling time. And for many people, there is hardly anything better than setting off in their own car towards Italy or the south of France, for example - the main thing is the sea. The problem is that there are countless toll stations along the way and it is not uncommon for long traffic jams to occur in front of them. How nice would it be to simply drive past them? The Rosenheim-based mobility tech start-up www.maut1.de/en/ has a solution that is already trusted by over 150,000 users: A toll box with which the specially reserved lanes can be used.

The electronic toll collection devices from maut1.de can be used in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal for vehicles up to three metres in height, such as cars, motorbikes or small motorhomes. The toll box is also valid in Austria for motorhomes and vehicles over three metres in height. Users of the toll box no longer have to stop at the toll station (to take a ticket or pay). They can drive at just under 30 km/h on the special lanes towards the barrier, which then opens automatically via radio contact.

The maut1.de toll box can be ordered online at www.maut1.de/en/ and is activated within one to four working days and delivered ready for immediate use. The box holder is mounted on the windscreen of cars and motorhomes - usually in the shaded, uncoated area directly next to the rear-view mirror. Motorcyclists should ideally stow the toll box in a tank bag in the direction of travel.

The advantages of the toll box from maut1.de:

  • Comfort and convenience: With the toll box, there is no need to wait at the toll booth. Instead, travellers can simply use one of the reserved lanes (recognisable by the "t" for telepass or télépéage) and can pass through the toll station without stopping. There is also no need to search for a credit card or cash for the payment process. The toll box also covers so-called FreeFlow routes, where there are no longer any toll stations, but for which a fee is still charged.
  • Time: Users of the toll box can save up to 45 minutes of waiting time per toll station during peak travel times.
  • Environmental protection: No need to wait at the toll station with the engine running or stop and go. Especially with large motorhomes, the braking process causes a lot of tyre wear and starting up requires more fuel.
  • Safety: The risk of rear-end collisions at toll stations is reduced because it is no longer necessary to stop with the toll box.
  • Multiple countries: maut1.de is the first provider of a toll box that can be used for several countries (Italy, France, Spain and Portugal).
  • German-speaking customer service: For all matters relating to the toll box, users can contact the professional customer service team at maut1.de.

„We want to make customers' holiday journeys as pleasant as possible with our toll box," says Julian Schmelzer, CEO and founder of maut1.de. "Especially during peak travel times, there are often long traffic jams at the toll booths. With the toll box, our customers simply drive past the traffic jam. What's more, with the toll box, motorhome drivers no longer have to lean far out of the window because the payment machine is too low, and motorcyclists can keep their gloves on in all weathers because they don't have to rummage around for their credit card or cash.

Valet parking - Parking in selected car parks in Germany

For more convenience when driving in Germany, maut1.de offers a parking service. Users simply register their number plate. In selected car parks, this is recognised by cameras on entry and the barrier opens automatically. The number plate is also recognised when leaving the car park. Billing takes place conveniently via maut1.de, without the need for a ticket or a trip to the pay station to park.

You can find out which car parks offer this service here.

The cost of the toll box and parking service

When ordering the toll box, a one-off charge of 19.90 euros for activation and 3.90 euros for standard shipping is due. The annual fee for using the toll box is 22.90 euros for cars and vehicles up to three metres in height and 79.90 euros for motorhomes and vehicles over three metres in height. In addition, a surcharge of five per cent is added to the gross toll revenue.

Activation of the parking service is free of charge for existing and new toll box customers. Users who only want to use the parking service pay a one-off fee of three euros. A surcharge of 50 ct. and five per cent on the parking fees incurred is due per parking process.

Billing takes place conveniently at the end of the month via the stored payment method.
